Within the City of Emeryville, the combination of very high traffic volumes and increasing pedestrian and bicycle traffic raise concerns about safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. Taking a proactive stance, the City has decided to intensify analysis and planning for pedestrian and bicycle safety. As part of this effort, the City of Emeryville has partnered with the UC Berkeley Safe Transportation and Education Center (SafeTREC) to conduct an in-depth review of pedestrian and bicycle safety issues at six key intersections in the heart of Emeryville.
This study is a follow-up to a 2005 study completed by the SafeTREC Team that can be seen here.
The 2018/2019 study will include field observations, community input, SafeTREC corridor recommendations and professional traffic engineering review. The study area includes the pedestrian/bicycle experiences at and between six intersections within or near the Powell Street Corridor in Emeryville:
- Powell Street and Frontage Road
- Powell Street and I-80
- Powell Street and Christie Avenue
- Christie Avenue and Shellmound Way
- Christie Avenue and Shellmound Street
- Powell Street and Hollis Street
The work has already begun and is anticipated to continue through Fall/Winter with a final report expected to be complete by Spring 2019.
As part of the community outreach and insight phase of this study, the SafeTREC team has planned two community meetings where users of the corridor can express their experiences traveling through the corridor and help frame new ideas for the corridor.
- Thursday, November 29th from 6PM to 8PM
Community Meeting at the Four Points Hotel Conference Room (1603 Powell St, Emeryville, CA 94608. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.) - Saturday, December 1st from noon to 3PM
Pop-up tent event at the Powell/Christie Intersection where intercept surveys will completed with bicyclists and pedestrians.
The City of Emeryville and UC Berkeley SafeTREC team are excited to see you at these events!
